Bratislava is a city with a long history. The oldest evidence of a settlement comes from year 5000 B.C.* Among the first
nations to settle here were the Kelts, Germans, and Romans. However, the first written evidence about the city is from the Salzburg annals written in 907 a.d.** In 1291, Andrew III gave Bratislava the city rights. The oldest building in Bratislava is the Crown tower, which is from 1245. In 1465, Mathias Corvinius founded the first university in Slovakia, Academia Istropolitana. During one period of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, Bratislava was the Capital. Between 1563 and 1830, 10 kings, 1 queen, and 8 wifes of kings were crowned here. In 1805, the Bratislava Peace was signed here. There are many historical monuments in Bratislava. For example the Bratislava Castle, the Saint Martin's Cathedral, Slovak National Theatre, Prime's palace, President's palace, Palffy's palace, Michael's Gate, the Old City-hall, the House at the Good Shepherd, and many more. Today, Bratislava is the Capital of Slovak republic, the President has his office here, the National Council is here, together with the most important cultural, industrial and science institutions. *-before Christ |
